The Sourdough Serenbe loaf and the Serenbe Walking Labyrinth Connection!

The delicious Serenbe Loaf is one of the longest-fermented types of artisan sourdough breads emerging from our baking studio. The Serenbe loaf has become a fan favorite, highly desired signature breads. It is comprised of wheat and spelt, with perfect golden crust outside and fluffy aromatic dough inside. This bread gently ripens in a proofing basket (Brotform) made of artisan coiled rattan. The form is dusted with flour ultimately resulting in a distinct pattern resembling the Serenbe walking meditation labyrinth.

The Serenbe walking meditation labyrinth inspired the name Serenbe Loaf. Beyond the physical similarities, the act of crafting a Serenbe loaf mirrors the essence of walking meditation's core premises that include: mindfulness, patience, and the value of slow, intentional processes.

Mindfulness:

Walking meditation in the labyrinth involves slow, deliberate steps while staying fully present in the moment. Similarly, the process of making an old-world long-fermented artisan sourdough bread requires attentiveness to the dough, understanding its needs, and being mindful of each step, from mixing the ingredients to shaping and baking the bread.

Patience:

Walking through a labyrinth is a contemplative practice that encourages patience and perseverance. It is a metaphorical journey, often representing personal growth or spiritual exploration. In the case of sourdough bread, the long fermentation process can take several days or even longer. It requires patience to allow the natural fermentation to occur and develop the complex flavors and textures that are characteristic of artisan sourdough.

Slow, intentional processes:

Both the walking meditation labyrinth and the process of making artisan sourdough bread emphasize the value of slowing down and embracing intentional actions. Walking the labyrinth encourages individuals to take each step consciously, experiencing the journey rather than rushing towards a destination. Similarly, the preparation of old-world sourdough involves a slow fermentation process that cannot be rushed. The dough needs time to develop its flavors and texture naturally, resulting in a unique and wholesome bread.
